Pl@ntNet is an innovative application that empowers users to identify plants effortlessly by simply taking photographs with their smartphones. It's an invaluable tool when a botanist isn’t available!
This application also serves as a significant citizen science initiative, as every plant captured through your lens is collected and analyzed by scientists globally to enhance our understanding of plant biodiversity and aid in its preservation.
Users can explore and identify a wide variety of flora, from flowering plants and trees to grasses, ferns, and even cacti. While it can also recognize many cultivated plants typically found in parks and gardens, its primary focus remains on identifying wild plant species. Hence, we encourage users to document wild plants, whether they thrive in nature or in urban environments like sidewalks or vegetable gardens.
For optimal results, providing Pl@ntNet with detailed visual information about the observed plant enhances identification accuracy. Many species may appear quite similar at first glance, but subtle characteristics often set them apart. Photos of flowers, leaves, and fruits are particularly important, but other features like thorns, buds, or stem hairs can also aid in identification. A full view of the plant (or tree) is useful, but it might not suffice for a definitive identification.
Currently, Pl@ntNet can recognize around 20,000 plant species, a commendable milestone but still a fraction of the estimated 360,000 species known worldwide. However, thanks to dedicated users like you, the database continues to expand daily. Don’t hesitate to contribute your observations; they will be vetted by the community and could eventually enhance the app's photo gallery.
The latest version of Pl@ntNet, unveiled in January 2019, comes packed with new features and enhancements:
- Filter recognized species by genus or family.
- Improved data revision that emphasizes contributions from experienced users based on community-validated observations.
- Re-identification of shared observations, whether they belong to you or other users.
- Multi-flora identification enables searching across all application flora, making it easier when unsure of the correct flora.
- Quick access to your favorite floras for convenience.
- Navigation through different taxonomic levels within image galleries.
- Mapping your observations.
- Access to numerous fact sheets.
